History of Tea
The history of tea is a rich tapestry woven over thousands of years, shaped by ancient legends, cultural exchanges, and a global journey that transformed a simple leaf into one of the world's most beloved beverages.
Camellia Senensis, more commonly known across the world as tea comes from the mountainous regions of East Asia most likely originating in Southwestern China and Norther Myanmar. Yunnan and Sichuan are the most known Chinese provinces from which most tea originates especially Yunnan being considered "the birthplace of tea". Taiwan is also known for upscale tea vendors with high quality teas.
Lincang City within Yunnan is also home to the world's oldest cultivated tea tree estimated to be around 32 centuries old. This is likely the area where humans first experienced the pleasure of eating, smelling, and brewing tea.
Ancient Origin Myth
The origin myth of tea comes from Emperor Shennong around 2737 BC. Concerned out of the health of his subjects, he decreed they boil water before drinking. One day after boiling water to drink for himself, the wind blew a few leaves from a nearby tree into his drinking bowl affecting the color and flavor. Upon tasting the brew Emperor Shennong realized its unique taste and healing properties. Emperor Shennong, also known for introducing many tools and processes around agriculture to his subjects was able to do so by testing hundreds of plant specimens to determine edibility.
Early Chinese Tea Culture
One of the earliest records of drinking tea is attributed to a medical text from the 3rd century AD by Chinese physician Hua Tuo. It is believed he was skilled in prescribing medicines, preparing decoctions, and could be responsible for developing pressure points for martial arts.
Originally people boiled the leaves in water in a single bowl creating medicinal decoctions likely over brewing tea making it bitter. Before the Tang Dynasty tea drinking was merely a way to pass time however later, with the the introduction of spouts on teapots and gaiwan the tea could be separated from the leaves stopping the brewing process allowing for complex flavor profiles to come through. By around the 8th century tea culture gave rise to tea ceremonies and social events incorporating tea.
